From Overview: "The fighting during the Civil War in Greene County that is known as the Battle of Stanardsville occurred March 1, 1864. It was a heated struggle on a brutally cold and harsh winter day. It consisted of cavalry charges, retreats, counter-charges and numerous individual skirmishes with hand to hand combat between the Union cavalry forces of General George Armstrong Custer and at least two companies, A and E, of the Confederate General Wickham's Second Virginia cavalry led by General Jeb Stuart. The Confederates left their winter camps near Barboursville to intercept the Union raiders, who had passed through Stanardsville the previous day on their way to Charlottesville."
